God Loves Me

When I was young, my parents often had company over (they still do). I liked it best when where were two or three families over, so there were children for me to play with, but I loved it when everyone, including the adults played games together. My favourite game was Fruit Basket Upset. In the game, chairs are situated in a circle – one chair for everyone, less one. People were paired and labelled by fruit. The person in the centre would call out fruit and whoever was that fruit would get up and switch chairs. The person in the middle tried to steal a chair and thus creating a new ‘it’ person. The best was when ‘fruit basket upset’ was called and everyone had to change seats.

I haven’t played the game for years but I still love fruit and I particularly love a basket full of fruit (not necessarily if it’s upset). We are in the height of summer and summertime fruit is plentiful. This week, and for the next 9 weeks, Kingdom Bloggers are writing about fruit – the fruit of the Spirit.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. ~Galatians 5:22-23

********

Love. Love is the first aspect of the fruit of the Spirit. In other scripture, it says love is the greatest of all and in another scripture says love covers a multitude of sins. It’s powerful and has fueled poetic songs since the beginning of time. Peter confessed his love for Jesus; John called himself ‘the disciple whom Jesus loved’.

My church’s vision statement is, “To walk in God’s love and give it away.” Before we can walk in it, we have to know it. I want to know God’s love – more than anything. I have more desire to have a greater understanding of God’s love for me than anything else. This wasn’t always true.

I used to think I knew God loved me. I trivialized his love for me, wanting more of the ‘stuff’. Whenever I heard a personal prophesy, and they shared God loved me, I discounted it. It’s so general and true for everyone; it’s not a stretch and it didn’t impress me with their prophetic ability. I wanted a directional word, something concrete and specific; point in the way I should go, and I’ll go (let’s do this thing). Over and over, I was told God loves me. And then I started doing prophetic evangelism and ‘spiritual readings’, and the message I heard most from God for other people is that he loves them.

I didn’t doubt the word I received was from God and it I trusted it was the word they needed to hear. I started looking at people and their behaviour and thought, “If only they knew God loved them, really loved them, they wouldn’t strive for attention so much (looking for love in all the wrong places).” It became a mission for me to love people, as God loved them because unlike them, I knew God loved me. I was confident in it.

But still I kept getting the same prophetic words, and then when I was finally fed up of not hearing the directional words I was looking for, I began asking the Lord for more and he kept saying, “I love you.”

It hit me. God loves me and when he repeats something, it’s because the listener is too thick in the skull to hear it so it needs repeating. I was convicted in my behaviour, chasing after his love by doing service and works and wanting the “stuff” because by it, I thought I might gain more of his love. I’ve been looking for love all along – perhaps my clothing didn’t shout, “Look at me,” but my acts of service did.

God is love and he is infinite, therefore we can know him for eternity and never come to the end of his love. It is whole and complete and it is focussed on me, on you. Song of Solomon, the most uncomfortable book in the Bible, is a love letter. He invites us to come [to his presence and live in his love], then go. I was living opposite; I was going before I had truly lived in his love.

The last couple of years have been lessons of learning his love. Did I know I was loved before? Yes, and I have awesome parents for making me secure and confident and know I’m worthy of being loved. But I didn’t know the depths of God’s love, even now, as I write, I feel his presence and I feel his love – like a warm oil pouring over my shoulders. I know I’m loved, but it’s still my prayer – to know it more, to know it fully.

One of my favourite teachings is by Chris Gore, from Bethel Church. It’s called the Secret of John, and it’s about God’s love. I want to give a copy of the teaching to whoever needs a reminder God loves them. Email me a request with your mailing address and I’ll send you a copy. I want you to know, God loves you. It’s not trivial and it’s not general and it’s not because God is love so that he has to love you. He loves you, just as you are.

Mission Statement of Jenna Vick Silliman

I am a woman that is led by the Holy Spirit whose passion in this lifetime is to see God’s abundant life and love manifested here on earth; to carry the fire of God and to shine for Him. “Our God is a consuming fire.” (See Hebrews 12:29.) I have been called "A Divine Arsonist" and I agree!
I am blessed to be a wife to Cliff, a mother to eight awesome children, and to be a writer, a communicator, and a dancer and flagger for worship and intercession. Dancing in the Holy Spirit has become a passion and a ministry in an of itself, but it is not my sole mission in life.
First and foremost I am a seeker of God’s Kingdom of joy and power in His Holy Spirit. His Kingdom is within us, here and now, heaven on earth—eternity has begun! Jesus said, “This is eternal life, to intimately know God.” (See John 17:3.) I am a worshipper of the One God, the Almighty King of Kings and Lord of Lords. I love Him with my whole self and enjoy unbroken fellowship with Him, giving Him thanks and rejoicing always. I am His little girl and I trust my Papa God. I delight in knowing Him and hearing His voice and He delights in me and hearing my voice. Day by day I seek to know Him more and know His Word.
I love to soak in His Presence, like basking in the sun!
My life Scripture verse is:
“You show me the path for my life;
In Your Presence is fullness of JOY,
At Your right hand there are pleasures forevermore.”
This verse is in the Bible two times, in both the Old and the New Testaments.
See Psalm 16:11 and Acts 2:28.
I am a devoted follower of Jesus Christ and I live in the power of His Holy Spirit, His anointing, His calling. As Jesus did, I do. As Jesus prayed, I pray. I am a prayer warrior; my prayers are powerful and effective. Like Jesus, I am a mediator, a connecting link, between people and Papa God and the destiny He has for each one. Like Jesus, I am a revealer of truth, a storyteller; I share testimonies, parables, spiritual awareness, and Bible stories—as the Spirit leads. Like Jesus, I am powerful. He said we would do far greater things than Him; therefore I will heal the sick, raise the dead, destroy the works of the devil, and perform miracles just like my Lord and King. “As Jesus is, so are we in this world.” (See 1 John 4:17.)

I am a creative person with unlimited potential because all things are possible with God. I am a living epistle, a letter, to be read by anyone. “Always be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks about the hope you have.” (See 1 Peter 3:15.) I am ready, willing, and able to do whatever Papa God tells me to do.

I am a minister and I live to make God’s truth known. I live by the awesome seven ‘F’ words that I preached on at Deep River Church: Focused, Faithful, Fulfilled, Free, Fearless, Fun-loving, and Firey! I believe the words of John Wimber, “There is only one ministry and that's the ministry of Jesus. If you find out what He's doing and participate with Him, that's where you'll find what you're made for and with it you'll find joy.”

I AM ALL OUT FOR JESUS and on fire with the good news of great joy, abundant life, and healing for all! Carpe Diem…Seize the day! GO FOR IT!

What I know and believe

What I know

Life is short. I know this well, having lost several dear friends and a family member in very recent years--primarily to cancer.

Life is unfair. A celebrity known for his drunken antics draws attention and cash-filled contracts, while the anonymous drunk asleep on the stoop merits barely a glance.

Life is good. More than a chain-store’s motto, it is true that life is good. Despite the fact that it is short and unfair, it is good because God made it so. It is man that tried to improve on the original formula and messed it up. Genesis 1:31, Genesis 3.

God is good and gives good gifts. Even the “gifts” I don’t want are good for me if God is the one giving them. Psalm 100:5, James 1:17.

That’s about all I really know.

What I believe

The Bible is true, and is the best, most honest, suspenseful and seductive love story ever written, without one ounce of sentimentality or saccharine-soaked romance.

Once life is over, it is not over. Through Jesus Christ, we have eternal life.  John 17:3.

I can rely on God’s strength when I am weak. God has no favorites. He loves everyone, including those we secretly hope--or openly proclaim--He doesn’t. But He may not like a lot of what we do or think, since so much of it is messed up. Despite recent claims to the contrary, He does love His Church (if he loves all sinners, then He definitely loves the Church, and it is not dead). Romans 2:11, Hebrews 9:28, Ephesians 5:25.

The words and meaning to the song, Jesus Loves Me.

Philippians 3:8, with the proper translation. Replace “garbage” or “rubbish” with “dung heap.” Some may want to use the term “crap” or “sh*t” and they would be using the most accurate translation. Martin Luther sure did. J

The words and meaning to the song, Amazing Grace.

The atonement is real, was necessary, and Jesus told us it was a done deal: “It is finished.” John 19:30, Hebrews 9:28.

Know His Voice, and Act on It.

Businesses and organizations spend considerable time creating a mission statement. A good mission statement will precisely and concisely relay values and direction for the company and will make it easy to evaluate whether or not the company is on target. How many of us, as individuals take time to write a personal mission statement?

Our theme this week is brought to us by Joyce Lighari. Joyce, our Tuesday writer, is the last of the original Kingdom Bloggers and this week we say good-bye to her. We’re sorry to have her go but we welcome Kerry Luddy (Saturday’s writer) to move into the gap left by Joyce.

To our readers who’ve been reading this blog, we thank you for your continued support but know our mission statement hasn’t changed. (Do you see how I slipped our theme in there? Nicely done, don’t you think?)

********

To know God’s voice, and act on it.

I’ve been pursuing God for the better part of two decades. Like ride lines at Disneyland, it’s never-ending and when you think the end is around the corner, when you arrive, you realize it’s another woven trail. It’s a life-long pursuit. Jesus said his sheep know his voice and they follow him. It’s a greater calling than to know he speaks (although many don’t even know that). I can be in tens of kids and their mothers, and when my Boy called, “Mom,” I know he’s talking to me; I recognize his voice. I want to know God’s voice to the same degree.

It doesn’t just happen, not in the way I want. The Hebrew word for ‘know’ is yada and denotes a carnal knowledge that bears fruit. Intimacy takes work, effort and personal investment. It’s my personal mission, so with that in mind, I make choices to eliminate blockers – from things like the movies/TV I watch or music I listen to. Unforgiveness, hardness of heart and the need to control are also blockers. I am quick to seek and offer forgiveness; I keep asking questions to remain teachable and I purposefully let others lead. True strength is not controlling everything but knowing just because I can, does not mean I have to.

The second part is acting on what I hear. Many people hear God’s voice but they don’t do anything about it. I love adventure and there is nothing more adventurous than walking on water, like Peter, or transporting to another location, like Philip. If we don’t act on his voice, first we become demoted back down to servant (John 15) and eventually we stop hearing his voice completely, like what happened to King Saul.

My mission statement starts with my basic value that Godi s good and his plan for me is prosperous with a hopeful future. He will never lead me astray. His voice, instruction and ways always lead to life – for myself, and for others. If I know his voice and act on it, everything else is taken care of.

"Dive On In" by Amanda Elder Silvers

There is so much that I love about summertime.  I love having the kids home from school.  I love not having to rush around in the mornings to be out the door by 7:30 a.m.  I love spending time outside with them; but most of all, as anyone who knows us can attest, we love the water.

From the time my children were infants I've had them in water.  When I had just had baby number one and was pregnant with baby number two we lived in a house which had an above-ground pool.  I've never been a fan of those- aesthetically speaking- but that all quickly changed when I could put my precious 9-month-old baby on a raft with me and let my 6 month pregnant belly soak in that cool water.  It was heaven.  It brought such peace.

We love all things "water".  The city pool gets our business every summer now that we have moved from the house with the pool.  My daughter has even joined the swim team this year.  That 8-year-old girl practically has gills and fins.  She's always been my little fish.

pEvery year since their arrival we've taken our babies to the beach for the summer.  It's such a nice change from the pool experience we are so used to in our free time.  The beach offers something for my family which is hard to describe, but I know many people who feel the same.  Standing on the shore, toes buried in the sand, and looking out at nothing but beautiful water for as far as the eye can see is an amazingly humbling experience.  We are so small, so minute.  My mind drifts to what may lay on the other side of that vast body of water.  What lives take place far, far away? Who are those people?  What experiences have they had?  Being at the beach always makes me feel closer to God.  I am standing in the very presence of his handiwork and never cease to be awestruck.  What an amazing God we serve.  I love that He is capable of creating such beauty.  Throughout my year during times I feel stressed or overwhelmed I will often close my eyes and just imagine being on a beach listening to the quiet sounds of the waves.  I can feel His peace simply wash over me like the tide coming in and immediately I'm relaxed.  It's a powerful entity unto itself.

Happy summer, everyone!  Take time to enjoy the little things.  Take time to marvel in His beauty.

Summertime and the Living is Easy

If you don’t like the weather in New England, just wait a minute…
Mark Twain

At times, I think I would like to move down south from the northeastern part of the USA. Then again, I would miss the changes of the seasons. Also, I understand the humidity can make the weather unbearable in the summer, the deeper you go in the South. Yep…I hear that Amen from my southern brothers and sisters.

So, all and all, in New England, the summer is pretty nice.

My days revolve around my family, especially my grandchildren.
We live in close proximity to them. My grandson only has to lie on the floor upstairs, near the floor vent and yell…” Granny, can I come down?”

He will be doing that more often with School vacation being here.

Thanks to a yard with trees, I can watch the kids play on their swing set and run through the sprinklers. I’ve even joined in water gun fights with them.

I like cooking out. Doesn’t it seem like food that is cooked outside, tastes better? My son and his family share some meals with us. He is a great cook. There is even a brick fireplace/oven in our backyard. Brick oven pizza, cooked outdoors…yum!

When my children were younger, we did a lot of tent camping. Lo and behold, my husband told me the other day that he is going to go camping for a few days. Even though I feel bad about him being alone, I can’t bring myself to sleep on the ground and deal with bugs and everything else that goes with camping. If I have a change of heart, I will give you all a report on the days in the forest.

On rainy days, my grandkids and I make tents in the living room. We eat our lunch under the blanket tent. At times, we gather a bunch of instruments and make lots of noisy music.

Another summer tradition has been joining the Reading program at the Library. It runs for four weeks. They get credit each day of reading and earn rewards. I am such a supporter of the Library. New worlds open up to children there.

Although I love the beach, being fair skinned, I got sunburned most of the time, in my growing up years. Skin cancer was not a worry back then. Though I do not have cancer, my skin is sun damaged. I also get sick in the full sun. I have to avoid it now

Summer wouldn’t be complete without a car trip down to the shore. We don’t do sunbathing anymore, but my husband likes to fish while standing out on a jetty. I bring a good book along. There is something refreshing and healing about the ocean air, isn’t there?

The trip wouldn’t be complete without stopping for a meal of fried whole belly clams. Yum! And I don’t mind the times we might stop for a Lobster Roll either.

Many people have told me, especially when my patience is not at its highest level, that my grandchildren are going to have such wonderful memories of what they did with their Granny. I try to keep that in front of me, when they are poking at each other and tattling on each other and saying “I am hungry” or “there is nothing to do.” I know you moms and dads know all about that!)

So,, my motivation for activities in the summer, are that I want my grandchildren to have a Granny that is reasonably happy and fun to be with. I want to be a Granny who can do cool things and think of great ideas. I also want them to mind reasonably well.

I was telling my granddaughter the other day that my two most favorite days of school were the first and the last. Her eyes got really big and said “Granny, could we have that Carnival we talked about last summer?”

I said "sure, sounds like fun to me."

To all the reader of this blog, talk to me the next day, when I am plopped on the couch, regaining my strength!

Jenna's Dance of Life by Jenna Vick Silliman

Jenna’s Dance of Life
by Jenna Vick Silliman

I turn to You, Daddy, at the break of dawn.
We talk things over as the day goes on.
Your love is sweet, my God, my King,
I love You more than anything.
I read Your Word till You speak to my heart.
You give me grace and a brand new start.
I give You my burdens, so I live carefree.
You show me favor; I dance with glee.
You stay right with me, I stay right with You.
I give You thanks the whole day through.
I keep the music going and praising Your name.
Ever since I met You, I’ve not been the same.
I dream about the future and to You I pray.
Now I have hope and I live life Your way.
I leap for joy and dance and twirl.
I’m glad I am Your little girl.

Lazy Days of Summer

It’s July and in the northern hemisphere we are in the summer season, although I have to take this by faith because we haven’t had evidence of it on the West Coast (dubbed Wet Coast). Summer is no less busy than any other time of year but the activities and responsibilities are often less structured. This week on Kingdom Bloggers, we’re sharing our favourite summertime activities. What are your favourite things to do in summer?

*******

The summers in the York household are the same, but different every year. Canadian school system requires students to attend classes until the end of June, summer is kick-started with our national holiday on July 1.

Every year (for the past 8 years), my summer activities begin with an extended girl’s weekend with my two oldest friends (since high school). One lives in Korea and another in Manitoba; sometimes we meet in Manitoba and sometimes on the West Coast and always our weekends involve spa time, lunch at the Olive Garden and an evening of prayer and worship. Even though we don’t talk much during the year, it’s easy to pick up where we left off and the most important question is, “What has God been doing in your life for the past year?” I love these weekends and it’s my favourite way to start summer.

Another signal to the start of summer is the grand opening of the pool. My Boy looks forward to it and suddenly our house is the favourite “hang-out” spot among his friends. I’ve never loved the water and it has to be really hot for me to get into the pool but I love that it forces me to stop for an hour or two everyday and relax while my Boy and his friends swim and play. He’s too young to allow him to swim by himself but old enough where my eye doesn’t have to be trained on him the whole time so I can close my eyes for a moment and lap up the warmth of the sun or get busy with summertime reading.

The York family has had a piece of waterfront property on the west coast of Vancouver Island for 100+ years. It’s a remote fishing village and takes a nearly full day to traverse over ferries, logging roads and a boat ride to get there but once there, it’s a pleasant week of beach time, happy hour (which starts at 2pm) and the best from the pacific ocean (prawns, crabs, salmon and halibut – yum!) In a crazy, over-protected world, my Boy enjoys the freedom to go off by himself (or with a cousin) to explore and make belief; give them a hammer, nails and some twine and the boys are busy for hours.

The rest of the summer is filled with trips to the lake, barbeques, weekend trips to Whistler, and extended visits with cousins. As I said, summer is busy and filled with activity but it feels more relaxed and less hectic than the activities throughout the rest of the year. Now, if only we could get some warm weather, then I’ll really feel like we’re experiencing summer.
