He took a bullet for me

Protection… Divine protection? I can think of a few.

The first time was a long, long time ago…
Pain’s branding iron pierced my right side. Tears rolled hot. I was alone. I was a boy. And I was dying… I knew it.
“Call Mom”
Standing straight was out of the question. So hunched and holding my side I made it to the phone.
Pain’s fingers strangled my voice to a whisper.
“Please, I need to talk to my mom.”
I waited and whispered a painful prayer.
My mom walked and whispered a fervent prayer.
God, help.
In that instant when we whispered…
God heard.
The pain vanished forever, before she reached the phone.
No theology, I just know it was real. God intervened—and I was healed.
That was the first time I can remember—there have been more.
Like the time the pain wasn’t physical but emotional. I was embarrassed and ashamed. Dad prayed a simple prayer. And I never wet the bed again.
No fancy words. I just know it was real. God intervened and I was free.
And then, the blizzard of ’76 sent my snowmobile sailing through the air and me to the hospital. A concussion and broken collar bone later it was said I should have been dead.
And the snow storm where the power went out, the furnace wouldn’t light, the phone lines were down and the drifts were high. Miles of nothing surrounded the drafty old farm house. The temperatures plummeted below zero. The house turned cold and we were freezing. I knelt in the cold dark basement next to a cold oil burning furnace. With no idea what to do, almost audible I heard the words.
“Lay your hands on it.”
I thought it was crazy. Maybe I was freezing to death, and my mind was playing tricks. But, what did I have to lose?
I stretched out shivering fingers and touched the cold dead furnace. A rumbling sounded, like a hundred bowling balls rolling, slow. I jerked my hand back, startled. But then I reached out again…and felt the warmth of the most beautiful blaze.
I could go on and would if time would allow. I’d tell you about the time my toddler, Travis fell off the top of the slide, a split second after I had whispered a prayer of protection. He cried so hard, but not because he was hurt—because he spilled his cup of soda. And I could tell you how a drunk bumped us from behind as we traveled about fifty miles an hour down a dark icy freeway. He spiraled out of control and sent several cars into the ditch. We fishtailed like through an icy maze, but managed to stay between the ditches. Was it simply good driving or did Jesus take the wheel?
You, too, could list near misses; moments that could have turned out so wrong, but ended up all-right.
But everything is nothing, compared to what I really want to share.
The ultimate experience is when someone steps in front of a bullet that was meant for you.
I knew better but I did it anyway. I’d gone where I shouldn’t have gone. I’d done what I shouldn’t have done. I’d said what I shouldn’t have said and thought what I shouldn’t have thought. I know this. I had it coming. But He took my place. He stood in the gap and paid the price.
On an old rugged tree my Savior died for me and by His grace I’ve been saved from hell for eternity.
He took the bullet for me…for you.

God's Intervention by Jenna Vick Silliman

I know God has performed “divine intervention” countless times in my life, but I have had a hard time thinking up some dramatic story to tell. What came to mind immediately, when I heard the topic for this week, was when I crashed into the car in front of me one rainy day back in 1980 on the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. I know angels cushioned the blow. I was so surprised their car was untouched. My baby blue VW Bug became a “padoodle” with one headlight out—but everyone was fine and the incident was soon forgotten.

One day, as I walked out of Safeway with my nine-year old son, Peter, I threw away the receipt in a barrel by the door. He said to me, “Mom, it is not right to throw garbage into the donations for the Food Bank!” I told him I just saw a garbage can out of the corner of my eye and didn’t realize it was not for trash.

I asked him, “Peter, do you know what it means to see out of the corner of your eye?”

He said, “Yes, that’s how I see the angels, out of the corner of my eye.”

I marveled. I wish I was able to see God’s angel armies constantly acting our behalf. They are truly performing God’s “divine intervention”. When we pray, He puts ‘em all to work. Angels are not giggling, fat, little cherubs. They are twelve feet tall or more and they are mighty warriors with super powers. Cool!

How has God intervened? I don’t know what I don’t know! I am highly favored and blessed beyond measure. On a daily basis He walks with me (and dances with me!) and talks with me. I am like Noah and Enoch, great men of the Bible, who habitually walked with God. (See Genesis 5:24 and 6:9 in the Amplified Version of the Bible.) HOW DIVINE! Jesus said, (See John chapter 15.) if we abide (which basically means to hang out) with Him, He will act on our behalf, empower us with more of His Spirit, and answer our prayers. In other words, if you want divine intervention, hang out with Jesus—He da man!

Last Sunday we celebrated the resurrection of Jesus from the grave. As His followers we have received Him and the gift of a new life. The Bible tells us that if anyone accepts Jesus and the free gift of salvation, (just talk to Jesus—He is alive and listening!) we become a new person empowered with God’s Holy Spirit. There is a Bible verse that says we are spiritually co-resurrected WITH Jesus Christ! Wow! Amazing! Now that sounds like “divine intervention” to me—big time. Hahaha!

Another way God intervenes every second of every minute is with laminin. I saw a movie about how big God is and how He created the stars and all the universes and how enormously gigantic He is to have such an endless creation out there. The galaxies and light years into outer space are immeasurable and beautiful and all placed in perfect order by our amazing Creator. I really didn’t like it because I felt so small and insignificant, like a crumb on an ant’s left baby toe. However, the narrator reminds us how much God loves us and cares for us and knows all about us—even how many hairs are on our heads at any given moment in time. There are endless and immeasurable miracles inside our bodies as well. Scientists that study the human body continue to marvel at a vast array of amazing facts. One discovery is called laminin.

Laminins are a family of proteins that are an integral part of the structural scaffolding of basement membranes in almost every animal tissue and between every cell of our bodies. Laminins are what hold us together. They are cell adhesion molecules. They are what holds one cell of our bodies to the next cell. Without them, we would literally fall apart. God, through the laminins He created, is divinely intervening inside our bodies all the time! What is really cool is that laminins are shaped like a cross—the symbol of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. (See picture above of a laminin.)

Laminins make me think of this Scripture song: "The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead, dwells in you, dwells in you..."

One of my friends on Facebook writes:

One of the many things I learned as I translated the Psalms was regarding the Hebrew word for shield. When David describes God as his 'Shield' it means God's very presence is wrapped around Him, covering and protecting. I like that. "God, Your wrap-around presence is my protection and my defense. You bring victory to all who reach out for You." (See Psalm 7:10.)

THANK YOU GOD FOR ALL OF YOUR AMAZING DIVINE INTERVENTION IN OUR LIVES!

It Is Well With My Soul

I was thinking, what is Peace? Is it an absence of conflict?  Or maybe a settled feeling? Perhaps, a  knowing that it is going to be all right? I think thee are appropriate answers.

I  thought of the well loved hymn by Horatio Spafford.. "It Is Well With My Soul" Then I knew my what question is more aptly answered by who is Peace?

Horatio was a successful lawyer in Chicago. He was married and he and his wife Anna had 5 children. A son and 4 daughters.

Tragedy met this man in proportions, we can only imagine.
First was the death of his only son, who was a mere 4 years old.

The next was the Great Chicago Fire that ruined him financially.
As a result of the last tragedy, he planned to sail overseas to assist DL Moody with his Evangelistic Efforts.

Unexpectedly, business matters had to be attended to and so sent Anna and their 4 daughter ahead...he would join them later.

Unbelievably, the ship his family was on, was struck by another and sank. His wife survived but their 4 daughters drowned. He was notified of this by receiving a telegram from his wife saying ,"Saved alone"
He left to join her.As  the ship that he was on, was at the approximate place that their ship went down, the Captain notified Horatio of that fact.
Horatio went into his cabin. This is where he penned this great and heartfelt hymn.

The first verse is probably the most familiar, as well as the refrain. But,as I looked more closely at the remaing verses, I saw that Horatio spoke of where he found his sustaining peace, on the cross of Jesus Christ.  It was in the joy of his salvation. He remembered the sacrifice that our dear Savior wrought for him. He was humbled and amazed at the emptying of self, which the Lord presented on behalf of all mankind. Horatio himself was part of redemption. The cross and the suffering and pain are where true Peace is found.
I can see that Peace is not as much a feeling or a state of mind, even though it can be that, but true Peace will never come apart from Jesus Christ. He is the Prince of Peace. Peace is a person. The Cross will always be the plumbline of our faith.
Two Beatles songs come to mind. One is "Imagine" and “Give Peace a Chance" They are nice songs and inspire many people but Peace...true Peace ( Jesus) is absent from these lyrics..

Unless the world knows this, men will never taste the ultimate Peace...the true Peace.

Simply, the Cross is the plumbline of our faith.

A familiar quote says it well.
“Know Jesus...Know Peace"..."No Jesus...No Peace"
